Does Heartland tear down and haul away your old, existing, shed?

The customer is responsible for removal prior to your scheduled delivery date. This is only required if the new Heartland shed is to be assembled in the same location.

How do you best maintain a shed?

Like your home, your new shed will require occasional maintenance to ensure many years of use. In addition to re-painting, you should perform other maintenance.

  • Keep all grass and other vegetation trimmed around the entire perimeter of your shed.
  • Sheds which are built on a wood floor should be constructed on 4×4 treated runners to resist damage from ground moisture and insects (treated wood 4×4 runners are not included in kit). These runners also elevate your floor, allowing for important air circulation under the foundation. This circulation must be maintained to ensure long life of your wood foundation.
  • Do not stack anything against the exterior of your building, such as mulch, soil and firewood for any period of time.
  • Locking door handles or levers should be sprayed with silicone or other lubricant to maintain locking mechanism and prevent freezing in cold climates.
  • We do not recommend insulating or heating your building.
  • Do not let sprinklers spray your building.

Foundation

Do I need to do anything to prepare my yard for installation through Heartland?

  • The assembly site should be level to within 6 inches; installers will not excavate the site
  • The area will need to have 3 feet of unobstructed space on all 4 sides and above, free of branches, bushes, power lines, etc.
  • Electricity will need to be available within 150 feet of the build itself
  • If you are having your shed built on a concrete slab, please contact Heartland for exact dimensions and allow 7 days for curing
  • Optional leveling blocks are available….see accessories in Heartland brochure

Do I need leveling blocks?

Leveling blocks are not required in all states/counties, but you should check local requirements. Your building will be built on 4×4 pressure treated runners. We will use treated leveling materials and shingle shims to level up the floor prior to installing the shed. If your ground is out of level greater than 6 inches, leveling blocks will be needed

Permits

Will I need to obtain a building permit prior to assembly?

You should check with your local Building Authority and Homeowners Association prior to installation to make sure your shed is compliant with all codes, easements and setbacks.

Paint / Caulking

Is painting included with my purchase?

Painting may be purchased separately when professionally installed. Otherwise, painting is not included with purchase and is the homeowner’s responsibility. Heartland sheds are built using pre-primed siding. Manufacturer requires the use of 100% acrylic latex paint. All exterior horizontal and vertical joints must be painted. Doors should be painted on all 6 sides including front, back, and all four edges. Painting your shed to match your home often meets HOA requirements.

Your shed is built like your home and should be caulked when painting. Manufacturer recommends paintable caulk. You should caulk all horizontal and vertical joints and any seams and gaps prior to painting.

How soon do I need to caulk and paint my shed?

Your shed should be caulked and painted within 30 days after installation. Check with your Homeowners Association to ensure compliance with architectural codes.

Is the shed sealed to prevent water from entering?

Our sheds are manufactured with the upmost precision to ensure every building meets our engineering standards. Once your shed is installed, be sure to caulk all remaining joints besides those critical joints already caulked by Heartland. Following these simple steps will prevent water from entering your shed.
